two examples:

1) I am independent from my parents.
2) The judiciary branch is independent of the other branches of government.

really tough question.

Independent from :
Use it when you want to say..something is autonomous or not related , something that can take its own decisions

1905 -Norway becomes independent from Sweden

Independent of :

Use Independent of when you want to say... something is not influenced by other factors.

The decision to hire you is independent of your experience in sales.
