i was under the impression there was a 5 year acceptance for scores. this would change my plans drastically if true.

Yeah, five years is the norm, as far as we know. I'd be surpised if a school only accepted scores less than two years old. I do know that some schools only accept TOEFL scores that are less than two years old, such as INSEAD and Wharton.

Of course, check with the individual school, but I think you're almost always safe with a GMAT score less than five years old.
