The IR section is a bit too new to know that. The only reason we know the penalty on the non-IR questions is that one of the GMAC staff mentioned it at a conference a few years ago. 3 percentile points for Q and V. I would imagine with IR questions being fewer and scale much tighter, you are looking at 10 percentile points potentially. Only a guess.

okey I guess they do have a negative marking but even I'm not sure.. yesterday I gave my GMAT and missed out 3 questions in IR.. eventually I scored 580 (which was much below my mock test scores. All my mock test scores were between 650 and 690). So, yesterday when I gave the GMAT I got 40 in quant and 30 in verbal and i'm sure the quant questions which appeared were well above average questions. What do you suggest should I retake my GMAT(this was my 1st attempt and I am just 22 right now so don't have much W.E)? Are there some good colleges which take that score? Plz help

It's going to be tough to get into a competitive school with a 580 and minimal work experience, but what you consider a good school depends on your needs and goals. There are plenty of places to get a good education that don't require very high scores.

As for the IR, keep in mind that it has no effect on your 200-800 score--it is scored on a separate 8-point scale.
