Is TOEFL/IELTS part of evaluation? [#permalink] New post 18 Jul 2008, 12:33
Anyone knows if TOEFL/IELTS is part of evaluating, or comparing applicants aginst each other?

Is there any disadvantage in using TOEFL/IELTS waiver?

It is there to verify that you meet a certain basic English requirement.
If you have waived it, that just means you meet the requirements.

All you need to do is meeting the requirement (generally English as mother language, sufficient ielts/toel grade or degree for an English speaking college).

I do not see any reason why b-schools would prefer a particular requirement to another one.

The English proficiency test is not the first main factor but in equal situation of GPA and GRE or SAT of course the student with higher score of TOEFL/IELTS stands a better chance.

Also let me say that in my opinion TOEFL has more weight than IELTS in ones resume.

From what I understand TOEFL is an "elimination" criterion whereas GMAT is a "selection" criterion.

Most schools have a strict minimum score requirement for TOEFL. Any applicant not meeting that score is eliminated. A waiver of TOEFL doesn't put you at a disadvantage because it merely means that you are competent in English or in other words, you would have satisfied the minimum score criterion for TOEFL.

GMAT on the other hand is definitely used for comparing applicants. A school will never say that the minimum GMAT requirement is 700 although the mean and median of that school might be 710+. GMAT and GPA are looked at to evaluate the intellectual ability of the candidate. TOEFL plays no role whatsoever in evaluating an applicant.

You should take IELTS sample test, you will see you will get a good score if you have basic English.
