I thought working together they would be sufficient but they are not.[/quote]

1. x + y < 20

x could be 25 and y could be -6. so insufficient

2. y < 20

again, x could be 25 and y could be -6. so insufficient

E is your answer.

now it could be C if they said the numbers were all positive integers, but they don't say that.

obviously each alone is not suff

1) x+y<20
2) y<20

together

x+2y<40

x<40 - 2y

STILL Y COULD BE +VE OR -VE

E is the answer
