Stmt 1: The inequality is satisfied if x>1 or -1<x<0.
Insuff.

Stmt 2: x^2 < 1, hence x is in the interval -1<x<0 or 0<x<1.
Insuff.

Combining,
We have only one interval i.e -1<x<0. Hence sufficient.
