Issues with Overlapping sets [#permalink] New post 12 Aug 2012, 04:01
Hi Guys

Im having trouble with problems on overlapping sets.. I dont know which method to use with problems (eg. Formula vs Venn Diagrams vs Matrix).

Can you advise any material or provide me links which could help me here? Ive gone through Manhattan for this, doesnt seem to have helped.

Thanks

Hi Deliverance,

This is a good question, because any question type with three methods can leave you a little confused! But here is a rule of thumb: Use the formula when possible. This isn't always, but if you have clear-cut values for most of the variables in the Overlapping Sets Formula, plugging those values in is the easiest solution. When the formula doesn't work, or if you're not sure if it will work, use the Matrix method. The Matrix is slow, but it's reliable and works on nearly every problem in this category. Finally, avoid Venn Diagrams; it can be hard to properly distinguish which numbers are associate with which group or groups of elements. However, for the very rare 3-part overlapping set, you'll need a Venn Diagram because the matrix and formula don't really work.

I hope this helps, and good luck!
