gmataquaguy, What is the source of this questions???
Just a bad question and a lot of typos...
It has been said that all one can do for a sprained ankle is leave it alone while it heals itself, ice it, and to lie with it in a slightly elevated position
A) all one can do for a sprained ankle is leave it alone while it heals itself, ice it, and to
- Missing "TO" before leave.. Need a "to leave" participle after linking verb is...
B) all one can do for a sprained ankle is to leave it along to heal itself, to ice it, and lie with it in a slightly elevated position.
- missing to before lie with it.....
C) all one can do for a sprained ankle is leave it alone while it heals itself, and then ice it and
- same as A. and the usage of "and then ice it...and "
D) the only that can be done for a sprained ankle is leave it alone while it heals itself, ice it, and lie with it in a slighly elevated position
- D is parallel but missing a key piece of "to participle"
E) the only thing that can be done for a sprained ankle is to leave it alone while it heals itself, to ice it and lie with it in a slightly elevated position
- This one is awkward to... Here you have a comma before "to ice it" and no comma before "and lie"

sorry gmataquaguy but the typos make the question confusing. Based on what i can read i will go for B.

Here is my reasoning.
Get rid of all that dont have "to" participle after linking verb is.
Here is the difference between linking verb usage.
"All he wants to do is drink milk"
"All he wants to do is to drink milk"
So left with B and E. And believe me, both are BAD...
Since E is saying multiple things and referring to them by one thing..
I would pick B...

C?
a- the "to lie" is not consistent with the rest of the sentence
b- same reason as a only "to" is used with "leave" and "ice" but not "lie"
d- "only that" does not sound correct
e- if you are listing three separate things that can be done for a sprained ankle, does it make sense to use the phrase "the only thing"?
i'm not sure how clear my explanations are, but those are my opinions...
i'm very iffy on this one..

Sorry folks for messing this one up. I'll post as a new thread and perhaps we can gauge the degree of difficulty of this question.
