It is 60 miles from Atlantic City to Philadelphia. Two trains leave at 10:00 A.M., one from Philadelphia at 40 miles an hour and the other form Atlantic City at 50 miles an hour. When they meet, are they nearer to Philadelphia or to Atlantic City?

They are closer to the station from where the slower train left.
I believe it is Philadelphia.

It is obvious that if both trains leave at the same time, the faster one will cover more distance than the slower one and therefore they will meet closer to the original point of the slower train (i.e. Philly).

Looking at actual #s:
.....Train 1...Train2
Dist...x............y
Rate..40..........50
time....t............ t

x = 40t
y = 50t
50x = 40y
x = 4y/5

x+y=60
9y/5 = 60
y = 33 1/3
x = 26 2/3

They meet 26 2/3 miles from Philly and 33 1/3 miles from Atlantic City

    relative speed = 50+40 = 90 mph
    The trains will meet after 60/90 = 2/3 hours.

    Phil-----80/3----x----100/3---Atlantic.
