What is being tested here? C Parallelism - it is characteristic of A as IT IS of B it is characteristic of X THAT the taste has played....... singular verb - taste has played In this case C only survives on the basis of verb-tense agreement. But, can we use ellipsis in this case. It is X of Y, as of Z instead of: It is X of Y, as (it is X) of Z. Can you explain how it changes the meaning/intent here. Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance. if you say it is X of Y, as of Z, shouldn't you use as of THAT of Z to make it clear what of Z that you are referring to? that's how i understand it

(A) of virtually every great American museum, the taste of local collectors has played at least as large a part in the formation of their collections as has - it is of x as it of y, also has should be have (B) of virtually every great American museum, that the taste of local collectors has played at least as large a part in the formation of their collections as has- same problem as A (C) it is of virtually every great American museum, that the taste of local collectors has played at least as large a part in the formation of its collections as havekeep it for now (D) it is of virtually every great American museum, that the taste of local collectors have played at least as large a part in the formation of its collections as have (E) it is of virtually every great American museum, the taste of local collectors has played at least as large a part in the formation of its collections as has
What is being tested here? C Parallelism - it is characteristic of A as IT IS of B it is characteristic of X THAT the taste has played....... singular verb - taste has played Although there are other ways to eliminate wrong one's but quite frankly other options have few obvious mistakes!

This is a severe test of style, SV agreement, pronoun error, prepositional parallelism; In fact, even the non-underlined portions seem to have some style error. (A) of virtually every great American museum, the taste of local collectors has played at least as large a part in the formation of their collections as has – 1 ‘As has’ is an S-V error. 2. What does ‘their’ refer to. If it refers to collector’s collection, it does not make sense. Instead of ‘their’ we must use ‘its’ to antecede the museum. question. 3. The structure of this sentence is that of a complex sentence with a main sentence and a subordinate clause that should be introduced by relative pronoun ‘that’. In the absence of the relative pronoun ‘that’, the conjugation is suffering and both the arms are standing aloof form each other, turning it into a run-on. (B) of virtually every great American museum, that the taste of local collectors has played at least as large a part in the formation of their collections as has - Same S-V error and pronoun error as in A (C) it is of virtually every great American museum, that the taste of local collectors has played at least as large a part in the formation of its collections as have - a saving grace with no errors. (D) it is of virtually every great American museum, that the taste of local collectors have played at least as large a part in the formation of its collections as have ---- that the taste ….. Have is an S-V mismatch. (E) it is of virtually every great American museum, the taste of local collectors has played at least as large a part in the formation of its collections as has --- as has is a S-V mismatch and as the connector ‘that’ is missing, the run-on of the structure is prevalent[/color/]
Aside the above, when you say taste of collectors, and when you match it with the judgments of the art historian, it would have been better to use the plural ‘tastes’, rather than the singular ‘[color=#0000FF]taste’ We must also use ‘ historians’ rather than just historian, giving a feeling as if these things are decided by single historian in each case. Still I would not deem them too critical.
