I pick C!

The essence of the sentence is that his relationship with his mother is the best of all relationships.....

So, we need a which to refer to the relationship. Eliminate A, B and D

Between C and E - of all the women in his life, in E is unwanted. So C it is.

"which" should modify "the relationship" so C is correct.

I think it is B.

one rule concerning which is that "the relative pronoun “whichâ€

B is wrong because this would imply 'who' modifies the relationship.
We need which to modify the relationship.
the concept tested here is appositive phrases.

Great sentence. Yes, it is testing the appositive phrase, so we need which to properly complete the relationship Hemingway had with his mother.

C over B after some googling.
