Parallelism needs to be maintained. Thus, answer can be between D and E.
D is incorrect and thus go with E.

This question tests if you are diligent enough to read through all the available answer choices since (A) is not really grammatically wrong, but "sub-optimal" as far as the GMAT is concerned. I can see how someone may jump to (A) especially when under time pressure. Resist the urge. Agreed with previous reply, more parallel construction ("how noun verb and how noun verb", in this case) is preferred by the GMAC. It is clear that because of parallelism the answer should be between D and E. But why E and not D?
E is in active voice, while D is passive construction. Also inventory turns over by itself (purchase), not through action of external force - hence E is preferred.

It should be ''turnovers'' as that means an entity , similar to how ''Items'' and How ''Turnovers''

E for me. ||ism is present in D and E. And D seems to be incorrect.
