IT Professionals - Need advice [#permalink] New post 08 Aug 2008, 20:09
A quick background - I am pursuing an MBA so that I may change careers to Information Systems. Since my undergraduate degree is very specific to manufacturing I plan to use the business acumen and hard skills learned in an MIS concentration to help build systems that will increase productivity and efficiencies. I've been an SME on several development projects in my current job but seeing and understanding the bigger picture is my aim. I'd like to transition to a Business Analyst role, helping to create the vision by collaborating with clients and IT. . .after that I'd like to move into an IT PM, to more or less orchestrate implementations. Ultimately I'd like to get into technical consulting.

I wonder if a PT MBA while I work as a Business Analyst makes sense or if I should go full-time with focus on MIS. I am applying to Georgia Tech and Georgia State, both ranked very high for their IS programs.

Does this direction make sense?

Hi

I have done about 4 courses from Georgia Tech.'s MBA program, including MIS and Decision Support Systems. I do not know that the courses will in themselves help you with business analysis - since so much knowledge actually comes from experience across industries/verticals. However, for when you are PM, the degree will be good to have. I would suggest part time in your case if you are already leaning that way anyway.

Hope this helps.

hsampath,

Thank you for your response. You echo the comments of my friend, who suggested I look for some entry level BA work on a contract basis between now and Fall 2009. He is an IT PM as well. I will also be finishing up a professional certification in Business Project Management at NYU in November. I've learn PMI standard practices which will be helpful as well. I will be visiting GT at the end of August. I take the GMAT Aug 18th so we shall see, their average GMAT for PT is 610.

Any thoughts on Georgia State U or University of GA?
