It, that and these cannot be used here because they lack logical antecedents. Also, this is commonly tested on the gmat.
Only "so" can stand for "action" phrases, which in this case is "internalize the principles...."

That leaves us with C and D.
D is gross because of "him"
"him" is ambiguous, singular and also kind of sexist :P
C is the correct answer

We have to use doing so + them ; in other options it, that, and these have illogical antecedents.

...because doing so is correct expression, leaving two answers C and D. In addition, D uses pronoun him, which is incorrect.
So the answer is C.
