It takes the same time for a ship to travel 80 miles upstream trip and to travel 120 miles downstream. If the ship maintains a rate of 20 mile/h in still water, what is the speed of river water?

Let T = time is takes to travel
R = speed of the river

80 = T (20 - R)
120 = T (20 + R)

and solve 80/(20- R) = 120/(20 +R)
80*(20 + R) = 120*(20 -R)

1600 + 80R = 2400 - 120R
200R = 800
R = 4 mph

(and, unfortunately, this is a junior high school problem)
