Its done 640----> 710 [#permalink] New post 07 Dec 2008, 22:20
Hello All,
I am happy to say that I am done with the GMAT and this time its for good.
Scored a 710 (Q48 V39)
This exam was not taken under the best of circumstances. Firstly the exam was scheduled for Dec 3rd, but the test centre cancelled the date and I was asked to reschedule. My dad was coming to visit me on the 4th of Dec and I wanted to get the exam out of the way before then. But the next available date was Dec 5th. Anyway that being arranged, my dads flight was delayed by 4 hrs and he arrived at 10pm the night before my exam.
My appointment was booked for 8:00 am and I just slept from 2:00 to 5:00 am.

So I do not want to think about my performance being better in the exam, but honestly I think I cldve done a wee bit better in the verbal .(OR NOT)

So in the spirit of being inspirational and all that, this is the second time I am attempting the GMAT. I had scored a 640(Q44 V35) in May, and honestly wanted to just give it all up. I had also booked a trip right after during which I had to study and well it took me some time to get back to the GMAT. I also live in Edmonton, Canada where I can never book an appointment . They did not have any appointments in October or never when I had checked in August, and so I was left to wait out the 4 months Aug-Dec to prepare and write the exam.

Never have I hated any 4 letter word more than the GMAT. Trust me I just gave up ont he concept of being normal. My office colleagues began thinking I was wierd, my friends well they know I am wierd, but the worst part was I did not go out more than twice in 4 months. Its just that between working and the gmat I had no energy to do anything else. Well, I even lost my road map to the gym.
I do not regret giving up anything, I did my best and well all I can say is the GMAT is not as bad as you think  I know I know.
In addition to the OG 11th edition, Quant and Verbal Supplements I would suggest the following.

- Its about timing. If you can finish the test giving enough thought to each question and solving it, you can score 48-49 in the quant section. The GMAT Club tests are a godsend, I solved all 25 of them and honestly my quant score improved as a result of these tests.

- The verbal section, you really need patience. On barely 3 hours of sleep I lost my patience by the time I reached the verbal section. Use the GMATTER software to solve SC, CR AND RC questions. You get used to the computer interface and it definitely helps with timing.

-The LSAT is good but I prefer the CR Reasoning Bible. I have posted a summary of my CR notes somewhere on this forum. Practice timing and develop patience.

-SC can definitely be improved with the help of the MGMAT SC guide. The GMATTER is also really useful. What I found helpful was the verbal forum on gmatclub. Solving 50 SC questions is not as challenging as solving a combination of CR, RC and SC. So I would recommend browsing the forum and understanding the explanations given.

-Practice the full length tests with the essays. I completed 8 full length tests 12 days before the exam and that is the only reason why I managed to get at least 39 verbal. This was because I had trained myself and built my stamina enough to be attentive during the 3.5 hour tests.

-The GMAT focus Math tests are useful if you have the money to spend, they definitely build your confidence and extra GMAT questions.

-AWA: I used the post by chineseburned, so useful and definitely saved me a lot of time.

Good luck with your exam. Build your confidence and Practice.
I am happy with my score and do not want to spend another year studying. Its time to start LIVING Woohoo!!!!

I would like to thank all the GMATClub members including amitdgr, jallenmorris, fresinha12, jlola21, GMAT TIGER, Walker, chineseburned, Yihwei, lsuguy7,kyatin, and so many more of you who have helped me out these past months.

+1 to that - a 710 on 3 hours sleep is really impressive, and you must have prepped really well. Good luck with the apps!

Congrats, of course. I am new to this forum as you can see. I tried finding the right thread to post this but failed. Hence: What books would you suggest for the test? I am having it in 20 days. I have Kaplan stuffs only. I have heard a lot about OG. Is it a MGMAT book? where vexactly can I find them online? Please Help. I wanna order them today. Thank you.

Hey Thank you,
The OG is the official guide from the Pearsonvue. It is an orange book pretty thick. I would suggest you use that as it has the most similar questions to the actual GMT. if you need help in particular areas in the quant section. The MGMAT guides are good, but you can use the Kaplan books. Also I would suggest in the next 20 days you work on cat exams to help you on speed, stamina and accuracy.
Good Luck!!
