If the information above is true, which of the following must also be true?

(A) James has a higher grade point average than Elizabeth.
(B) James has a higher grade point average than Nancy.
(C) Nestor has a higher grade point average than Nancy.
(D) Elizabeth and Nancy both have a higher grade point average than James.
(E) Nestor and James both have a higher grade point average than Nancy.

C. Using given conditions, we can for sure say Nestor has a hugher GPA thean Nancy.

Since Elizabeth had the same grade point average as Nestor and Nancy has a lower grade point average than Elizabeth, So Nestor has a higher grade point average than Nancy.

James’s grade point average puts him in the top third of the graduating class of college A. Nestor is in the top tenth of the same class. Elizabeth had the same grade point average as Nestor. Nancy has a lower grade point average than Elizabeth.

If the information above is true, which of the following must also be true?

(B) James has a higher grade point average than Nancy.
(C) Nestor has a higher grade point average than Nancy.

C is best supported
for B:

suppose elizabeth (=nestor) is at 1st position, nancy is 2nd james is third, this satisfy the criteria specified by the argument. In this combination B is not true hence B cant be the answer.
HOpe it helps..!!

since it is specified here that "Elizabeth had the same grade point average as Nestor" so don't u think that here if nestor's rank is 1st then Elizabeth rank should also be 1

yeah both have same ranks because there GPA are same.
the case that B presents is not the case "must be true" but the case "can be true".
This SITUATION below presents the case when B is not true and the circumstances satisfies all the criteria in the argument.

SITUATION:

elizabeth (=nestor) is at 1st position,
nancy is 2nd
james is third=> james has lower GPA than nancy; B is not true in this case.

Not a tough question, but requires a lot of concentration and logic. (I picked E in a hurry :/)

In these type of questions, the data sample is very important. Instead of taking "the more obvious" data, try to take data that is different from the usual.
James's GPA puts him in top third. So he can occupy 1, 2 or 3.
Nestor and Elizabeth can occupy 1 through 10.
Nancy is always below Nestor and Elizabeth.
sample 1:
Let
1 - E/N
2 - Nancy
3 - James

This eliminates options A,B,and E

Now take
1 - J
2 - E/N
3 - Nancy

This eliminates D.
The only option that holds true all the time is C.

Thanks,
Uma

Nestor is in top tenth of a class. Elizabeth has same average grade points as Nestor while Nancy has lower grade points than Elizabeth. This means that Nancy has lower average grade points than Nestor. Hence, C is the answer.

IMO.

Top Third = top 33%
Top Tenth = top 10%

Hence only Option C.

Re: Jamess grade point average puts him in the top third of the graduatin [#permalink]
Given information:

James is in top 3 percent
Nestor is in top 10 percent, but we are not given which position he is in, so he can be in top 3 percent as well.
Nestor > Nancy.

Based on all the info, only option C can be true.
