James’s grade point average puts him in the top third of the graduating class of college A. Nestor is in the top tenth of the same class. Elizabeth had the same grade point average as Nestor. Nancy has a lower grade point average than Elizabeth.
If the information above is true, which of the following must also be true?
(A) James has a higher grade point average than Elizabeth.
(B) James has a higher grade point average than Nancy.
(C) Nestor has a higher grade point average than Nancy.
(D) Elizabeth and Nancy both have a higher grade point average than James.
(E) Nestor and James both have a higher grade point average than Nancy.

can someone explain the difference between choice C and D ? what should be the correct answer?

I think C is the correct answer

J (1,2,3)
Nest (1,2,.....10)
Nest=Eliz
Eliz>Nancy

(A) James has a higher grade point average than Elizabeth - Not true because J can be 3 & Nestor= Elizabeth can be= 2
(B) James has a higher grade point average than Nancy Not necessarily true because again James can be 3 and Nestor=Elizabeth can be 1 and Nancy can be 2
(C) Nestor has a higher grade point average than Nancy Correct Answer, because Nestor=Eliz & Eliz is always higher than Nancy which makes Nestor higher Nancy all the time
(D) Elizabeth and Nancy both have a higher grade point average than James.Elizabeth can be 1 Nancy can be 2 and James can be 3, in which case this option is incorrect
(E) Nestor and James both have a higher grade point average than Nancy.Nestor necessarily has higher grade point but not James, he might have higher or lower

Can only be C.

(A) James has a higher grade point average than Elizabeth.
(B) James has a higher grade point average than Nancy.
(C) Nestor has a higher grade point average than Nancy. Since Nestor and Elizabeth both have the sames GPA, and Nancy is lower than Elizabeth, Nestor is higher than Elizabeth
(D) Elizabeth and Nancy both have a higher grade point average than James. We only know that James is in the top third, but we don't know where he lies in the top third. He could be in the top tenth as well, and have a higher GPA than anyone.
(E) Nestor and James both have a higher grade point average than Nancy.

Options A,B,D and E can be true, if more information is provided.

But C is always true based on the given information !

IMO C.

It is not mentioned in the stimulus that the higher the grade point average is the only criteria for getting a rank. There can be other criterias.

Think on this from 3 Idiots perspective
