"Huge Sums" plural so cannot be referred by singular "It". There by A, B, D, and E are wrong.

C looks okay to me as well.
Japan received huge sums of capital from the United States after the Second World War, using it to help build a modern industrial system.

(A) Japan received huge sums of capital from the United States after the Second World War, using it to help build
Received and using can NOT go together.
(B) Japan received huge sums of capital from the United States after the Second World War and used it to help in building
"used it to help in building" is NOT correct
(C) Japan used the huge sums of capital it received from the United States after the Second World War to help build
Looks okay.
(D) Japan’s huge sums of capital received from the United States after the Second World War were used to help it in building
It appears that Japan has huge sums of capital ONLY from United states, which is NOT the intent of the question statement..
(E) Receiving huge sums of capital from the United States after the Second World War, Japan used it to help build
In place of 'Recieving'... If it were 'Having received', it woul have been good, but Recieving and used can NOT go together..

Hi mates,

IMO C

(A) Japan received huge sums of capital from the United States after the Second World War, using it to help build
(B) Japan received huge sums of capital from the United States after the Second World War and used it to help in building
(C) Japan used the huge sums of capital it received from the United States after the Second World War to help build
(D) Japan’s huge sums of capital received from the United States after the Second World War were used to help it in building
(E) Receiving huge sums of capital from the United States after the Second World War, Japan used it to help build

A and B out: sums of capital is plural, so it is wrong
C hold
D pasive voice: akward
E same mistake as in A and B

OA and Source?

Thanks

Agreed and used x to help build is the correct form. building is incorrect.

(C) Japan used the huge sums of capital it received from the United States after the Second World War to help build

I wounder whether "it" maybe refer to "capital" in choice C?

replace "it" with "capital" in the sentence.. and try to read.

Japan used the huge sums of capital <capital> it received from US..
does it make sense???? If No.. then it clearly refer to Japan.

C is my choice too. In other options, the use of 'it' is ambiguous.

fanchen: IMO, 'it' is not referring to capital. Option (C) mentions that '...it received from...', which means that '...Japan received from...'. 'capital' cannot receive anything from the Unites States; the country Japan is receiving someting from the United States. HTH

i think it is not a GMATPrep uestion

but the best way to write is:

Japan used the huge sums of capital it received from the United States after the Second World War to help build

here evertthing is clear:

Japan used the huge sums of capital, received from the United States after the Second World War,to help build
