Is huge sums of capital singular or plural. if its plural, then can i say that this sentence is correct -
Japan received huge sums of capital from the United States after the Second World War, using them to help build a modern industrial system.
If not, what is the error in the sentence.

Thanks.

"sums of capital" is plural. Although your sentence has nothing wrong, I still prefer C's construction as it is more concise and less cumbersome without the introduction of a participial phrase. Participial phrases act as adjectives and modify noun "Japan" for it is Japan which is "using them[sums of capital] to help build a modern industrial system"
