Jeff Sackmann's Quant sets vs. Total GMAT Math [#permalink] New post 25 May 2011, 15:04
Hi,
Although the math questions of the OG 12th seem easy to me, my current level in math is 45. My explanation is that the OG 12th doesn't cover the diverse math topics deeply. So when I take the GMAT Prep, there are some type of problems that I have not seen in the OG.

In this sense, I have read that Jeff Sackmann's Total GMAT Math could be very helpful. Even I have read a review, I think that it was written by bb, in which it mentions that it is a excellent book to get a 50 in quant. For example, it has 100 questions whose level is 700+.

However, I have read that Jeff Sackmann's Math Sets could be better because there are more questions (1000) and maybe more difficult. The problem is that the sets cost USD 250, and I don't know if it is necessary to study 1000 questions!

What do you think? As additional information, I must say that I master most of the concepts of quant; also, I have the MGMAT guides, and I have access to the GMAT Club math tests.

Thank you very much!

PS. Are the Sackmann's Sets divided by difficulty level? Really, I don't want to spend hours and hours in sub 600 level questions. I want 650 level questions, and then 700+ level questions.

My two cents -

1.Probably you are at a stage where you have a checklist of your not so strong points in Quant section.Hence, it will be useful to spend more time on those.

2.There can be some varieties of problems shaped up,based on your not so strong areas in Quant section. So,important thing is to be familiar with those varieties.I am sure the MGMAT Math forum, the GMAT Club Math forum and the Tests- MGMAT and GMAT-CLUB are more than sufficient to lock yourself around those areas.

3 Be realistic about your target score in Quant section,as you are familiar that proportionally a 45 to 48 wont effect that much your score in actual GMAT than a 34 to 40 boost in Verbal.

My regards for your preparations.

Yes, the sets are divided in terms of difficulty. There are three broad levels: (1) Fundamental, (2) Challenge, and (3) Extreme Challenge. Based on your current skill level in math, you should probably skip the Fundamental sets. At the very least, though, look into the Extreme Challenge set (there is only one of those). If you truly like his products, then perhaps go for the Challenge sets after that. He also has some sets for statistics, exponents and roots, and so forth. You can find more information on his website here. You many also find this review helpful.

The Total GMAT Math book was not a good fit for me, so I advise you to stick with the Manhattan guides, which you already have. But make sure to complete the GMATClub tests. These are extremely helpful, albeit quite painful.

Another useful tip is to fully read all the explanations. Sackmann has the best explanations in the industry. And the GMATClub tests are also important to review.
