Joint degree MBA/MPP [#permalink] New post 31 Dec 2012, 11:28
Dear consultants,

I am interested in getting a MPP from Harvard Kennedy School, and any top-ranked MBA program (e.g. HBS, MIT, Wharton).
I understand that for non-Harvard MBA programs, I can apply to them in my 1st year at HKS, but if it's HBS, I have to apply concurrently at the same round.
I am just wondering if there is any possibility that I may only be admitted to either one of the schools? e.g. I only get into HKS.
Would the fact that HBS wants to ding me be factored in HKS' decision on my admission? Or they do the admission process totally separately that they won't know whether I am accepted to which until notification dates???

I feel like I have a higher chance of getting into HKS, but as I still wanna do an MBA, I don't mind doing it at any top-ranked program. Of course I'd try HBS, but I already applied before and got rejected...so just not sure if it's a good idea to still try HKS+HBS...

Please advise!

You have a lot of your facts correct so I will try to confirm them.
(a) HKS has joint degree programs with a select group of premier business schools including HBS, Stanford, Wharton, MIT and Tuck.
(b) As a joint degree candidate, your applications are reviewed by three committees in most cases: HKS, the business school you are applying to and a committee that overseas the joint admissions.
(c) It is possible that you can be admitted to one program and rejected from another. I generally did not see this happen until recently - and most of the time it is the MBA program rejecting a candidate, not HKS.
(d) If HBS rejects you - you still have chances of being admitted to HKS -- as HKS application specifically asks which MBA programs you are applying to.
(e) You have to check with specific school on their policy of having you apply to HKS once you are admitted. Most schools will allow you to add on a joint degree if you have compelling reasons to do so.
