let Speed be S and Time to cover the journey be T

S * T = D (distance of journey) --- 1

now as per the question stem we have

(5/6)S * (T + 10) = D ----2

Equating Value of D from (1) in (2) we get T = 50mins or 5/6hrs .

Ans D

Its an easy question but answer choices made it bit interesting..
Kp you have got the right answer & I would have solved it the same way as you have on gmat but I have got an alternative explanation which will give the answer in around 20-30 sec!! :P

Let's see what others come up with..I will reveal my alternate approach soon!!

5v/6 * (t+10) = vt

5t/6 + 50/6 = t

=> t = 50 min

=> t = 50/60 hrs = 5/6 hrs

Answer - D

It was fairly short Mr. Subhashghosh!

But I approached this question as stated below,

New time must be 6/5 of old time (t) as the speed was reduced to 5/6 of the old speed (s)

Thus,

6/5(t) - t = 10
1/5t=10
t= 50 minutes

time and speed have inverse ratio's.
meaning 6/5 is the new time.

hence 6/5 t1 - t1 = 10 giving t1 = 50 min = 5/6 hrs.
