IMHO, "had occupied" is not needed
why not A then?

answer should be B
3 actions: KA occupying and fortifying....I
KA winning loyality........II
Danes knowing the above facts.........III
III happened after I and II.
I and II happened at same time.
So there is difference in time of occurences of I,II event from III event.
Hence we use past perfect.

I am going to try to use the split and resplit method I just studied from manhattan gmat.

First split, the action happened in 886 is before the past action in 893; therefore, past perfect is needed. So eliminate A, C, and D.

Second split, it does not have clear referent. So eliminate C, D, and E

The correct answer should be B. Total time used to answer this question 30secs.

So OA is B?

The explanation seems valid but recently I read a question that talked about an 'age' and we didnt use had eventhough we had 2 past events. The discussion said that 'had' was not required because talking about an age was like introducing a new clause in the sentence.

Here I thought the colon introduces a new clause so the first two events dont form a chronology witht he event after the colon.

I thought it was A but I will be content with B if it is the OA.

I also used the tense logic and arrive at B.
Can anyone can comment on the "Just Because" or "The fact that"?

Are both okay on GMAT or is one preferable to another?

I also don't like the use of "the fact that." If it is a fact, why not just say so. I don't know what value does this idiom add to any sentence.

But the answer is B in this question, because of the errors in other options.

Why do we need past perfect if the timeline is already clarified (years 886 and 893)?

When time has already been specified(886 and 893) than we dont need to use past perfect and in second option "the fact that" is also awkward. I arrived at option A but OA is B , B doesnt make sense to me

the fact is appropriate here because of the second part of the sentence.

what were the danes aware of? some fact.
what kind of fact? loyalty of alfred's subjects.
