Just took first practice test. advice please [#permalink] New post 15 Oct 2011, 17:53
Hey guys, I just realized that I'm behind for taking the GMAT by Christmas so I jumped right in. I really want to shoot for 700, but I've seen 3 months is recommended. However, my time is very flexible for a while so I can use the "good" hours for GMAT prep and get in 13 hours per week.

I read a bunch on the forums about starting and concluded that I should take a full practice to see where I'm starting.

So I went in cold for GMATPrep Practice Test and went pretty well:
46Q, 35V, predicted 660 Total

To be honest the Quant felt a little too easy though, I finished with 2 minutes to spare. I finished the Verbal with about 13 minutes left. I knew I was struggling on certain things which is good to build on.
So... How realistic is the GMATPrep Practice Test?

After reading a bunch of reviews I feel like buying the MGMAT set (8 guides, 6 tests) is the best route to go. thoughts? if anyone has been in a similar situation what did you do?

Thanks!

It really depends on how disciplined you are/can be.

If you can get yourself to go through the MGMAT guide books and the OG at a solid pace, go for it. If not, I'd highly recommend taking a course that suits you (many have a free trial so you can get a feel for their format). Heck I'd go through the free trials anyway, just to get tips and ideas you wouldn't be exposed to otherwise.

I don't know much about the accuracy of the GMATPrep Practice Test, but you can use the GMAT Score Calculator:http://gmatclub.com/gmat-score-calculator/

Good luck!

My immediate advice - Don't by all the guides at once!

Buy the Manhattan Sentence Correction Guide to start with. The book will also give you access to 6 tests. Your quant score is pretty good. However, if you want to get that 700 with an 80/80 split, you have to score a 48 in the actual test along with a verbal score of 40. This will give you a 710 with an 80/80 split.
