Just wondering whether conditions in a DS problem need to be [#permalink] New post 16 Sep 2011, 11:52
Just wondering whether conditions in a DS problem need to be consistent. For example is it possible to have:

A. x < 4
B. x > 8

Obviously you would not be able to answer such a question with both criteria, but it may be that 1 or either of them could provide an answer.

Think I may have come across a question like this, where the answers together don't make sense, but don't think it was an official question.

Thanks

Yes, DS statements absolutely must be consistent in any real GMAT question, because it needs to be possible to consider both statements together (even if one or the other statement were sufficient alone). You will find some questions on internet forums with inconsistent statements. Those are certainly not official questions. I wouldn't have much confidence that a question designer understands much about the GMAT if he or she can't even get that basic aspect of DS structure right, so I'd suggest ignoring those questions.
