Kaplan Vs. GMAT Review

Hey everyone,

Just a quick thought and to see if anyone else had the same feelings.

Been doing the practice gmat with Kaplan and have found the questions to be alot harder than those that are given in the GMAT Prep and GMAT Review books.

Does anyone else find this or am I just weird?

Hi Lucky8,

Are you talking about our practice sets, or our tests? Our practice exams are accurate; we have more students than any other test-prep company, and we use that statistical data to calibrate our scores. As for our practice quizzes, it's very hard to judge difficulty there--they aren't adaptive, remember!

Do you have any particular problems that you thought were problematic? I'd be happy to offer a few explanations!

I also find MGMAT quantitative a tad more difficult than OG.

At the end of the day, your attitude could go in any of the two opposite directions:

(1) You could interpret it as a challenge, to become better. So what if Kaplan's and MGMAT's exams are harder? You want to be great right? Solve them.

(2) You could speculate and convince yourself that the Kaplan's and MGMAT's exams are indeed harder than the actual exam. And then? In a way you're just trying to make excuses not to attempt 700+ level questions.

The key takeaway here is that one should just solidify the fundamentals. Everything else will follow. :)

There is no way to tell which exam is accurate - the most accurate is going to be the actual GMAT test. Many things can factor into the adaptive test for practice exams - the population taking the exam might not actually be taking the exam seriously which can sway the data - since it is a practice exam. The algorithm for the real CAT exam and its scoring has never really been fully revealed. The categorization of various question types and how they are delivered to test takers might not be as simple as easy/medium/difficult and may involve other parameters.

Certainly if you are aiming for a high score, you want to get everything correct and so what gmatsaga is saying does make sense.

One suggestion for your studying is to focus on the basics of what these sections test on - the reasoning, the frameworks, the approach.
Then, when you have mastered that, go ahead and get more practice from practice questions. Try the GMATPill Practice Pill Platform (http://www.gmatpill.com/gmat-practice-test/index) and focus on answering questions quickly and efficiently.
