Kindly evaluate my profile and suggest me the colleges where I may apply

GMAT score: 710 ( Q=50; V=35)
Citizenship: Indian
Age: 31
Class-X: 85.4% from C.B.S.E.
Class-XII: 77% from C.B.S.E.
Degree: B.Tech (Electronics Engg.)
College: KNIT Sultanpur ( a state govt. college)
Year of graduation: 2004
Percentage: 71% (ranked 7 out of a competitive class of 60)
Marital status: Married
Years of experience: 8 years

Current Employment(2006-present): Bharat Petroleum Corporation limited (a govt. enterprise and a Fortune 500 Company) as an Assistant Manager.

Experience: Oil & gas Sector-Cross country pipeline projects encompassing designing, tendering, planning, engineering, and site execution, liasioning with statutory authorities.

Past Employment Shyam telelink Limited( now MTS)(2004-2006)

Experience: (Telecom service provider) Worked as a node incharge, handled the customers complaints & new connections, lead the 6 members technical staff.

Extra Curricular activities:

•presented paper at college and also represented BPCL at AIMA.
•Attended various camps in NCC at school.
•Won distinction certificate in National Mathematics Olympiad Contest.
• Was the member of Organizing Committee of National level fest organized in the college.
•Was the member of Training and Placement team of the college
•Won first prize in Paper Presentation In the event organized by I.E.E.E. chapter of the college.
•Won various prizes in different events at college and school level.
•Executive of Literary council of the college.
•Played in volleyball team at regional level at school.

My reason for MBA:

1.Everyone wants growth and I am not an exception. Presently I am managing the contactors, clients, subordinates and statutory authorities, so why not with a specified expertise and degree and that too from a reputed university/college.

2.Presently I am working with a Public sector undertaking (PSU) i.e Bharat Petroleum Corporation ltd. Though company culture is very transparent, it can not stretch itself beyond its limits which are reflected in its delayed promotions and lack of acknowledgements. I want to get rewarded as per my efforts.

3.Presently I am posted at Bharatpur which is geographically a very small district. So, I want a fixed location with a role which adds my value with the passing years.

Kindly suggest me the colleges in which my goal and profile fits. I am considering both 1 yr and 2 yr programs but given my age 31 kindly suggest what is more suitable to me. Thanks for your kind cooperation.

Hi joinashish:

Thanks for reaching out to me. To be honest school, it is going to be difficult to provide you a relevant short list of schools that you should investigate further - but I will try. The "reasons" that you provide are not goals in any meaningful way. To be clear, goals are forward-looking and are specific. You need to define your post MBA role, as well as your longer term goals. What you have provided me as your primary justification are not goals, but rather a backwards looking view.

What I am reading into your list is that you are pigeonholed by a small company. When I consider your age of 31, I believe that you are putting forth a story that I call – the "escape hatch." You are making it sound as if you are in a dead-end position. Whether or not this is actually the case is irrelevant. The only thing you need to know is that you cannot make it sound this way when you write your essays or when you speak with someone on the admissions committee. You have to look like your trajectory is on the way up. Business schools are looking for the leaders of tomorrow, not someone who may be throwing darts at a board and seeing what sticks.

The other thing I want you to be aware of is how personally vested you need to be in the process of finding the school that fits you. Of course everyone wants to go to Harvard or Stanford, but beyond that, you need to understand what a particular school in the top 25 can offer you, and for the most part, where you will fit in. I find that a lot of applicants when they first start looking for that "right" school, completely underweight the importance of finding the right school. You have to get beyond a schools ranking or perception as a finance or consulting school. At the end of the day you really can learn the same basic types of business concepts from HBS or from some random online program. The difference is the people you will surround yourself with and how you will contribute to the community. In short, do not be a "rankings whore" but instead be true to yourself. ;)

Based on the limited information that I have, I would suggest that you look to one-year programs in Europe. I think that the opportunity cost associated with a two-year program would be too great in terms of salary sacrificed and debt incurred. Additionally, at age 31 you look a lot more attractive to EU programs. Finally, your applicant subgroup and international status will be of greater value to schools like Oxford and Cambridge, where the international representation approaches 90%.

I hope my high-level analysis helps. Good luck.

Respectfully,
Paul Lanzillotti
