Well, for the first time I have attempted to write an AWA. It took more than 30 mins to finish. As I am not able to think in this stipulated time frame. Need some help
. Kindly spare your valuable time to rate this out and briefly explain my flaws.
The following appeared as part of a promotional campaign to sell advertising space in the Daily Gazette to grocery
stores in the Marston area:
“Advertising the reduced price of selected grocery items in the Daily Gazette will help you increase your sales.
Consider the results of a study conducted last month. Thirty sale items from a store in downtown Marston were
advertised in The Gazette for four days. Each time one or more of the 30 items was purchased, clerks asked whether
the shopper had read the ad. Two-thirds of the 200 shoppers asked answered in the affirmative. Furthermore, more
than half the customers who answered in the affirmative spent over $100 at the store.”
Discuss how well reasoned . . . etc.
In this argument the author concludes that advertising the reduced price of selected grocery items in the Daily Gazette would help any shop to increase the sales.
In support of this argument the author cites some facts of survey that was conducted in the last month on a store in downtown Marston for four days. The author's
assumption is based on the facts drawn from the survey only. This leads to authors rosy prediction. The author's prediction is insurmountable and is needed
for redressal. Thus the argument is not convincing and some facts are needed to be ruled out.
To begin with, the author's assumption about the Daily Gazette is being read by all people leads to a gratuitous assumption. This argument is a stretch and is not
compelling enough. It is assumed that the Daily Gazette is a popular newspaper and every citizen follows the advertisement regularly. Its very ironical to
assume that buyers decisions are influenced by this advertisement. Though advertisement are convincing, but it can't be the epitome of judgment. Further delving for
facts are needed to make this assumption convincing.
Secondly, furthermore the author assumes that any grocery store in the Marston area would be able to increase their sales by following this step. This actually
over-weighs the argument. The study is conduction on a particular store. It can be a wholesale store which can afford to sale their products at cheap rate or the stock
of this particular shop is good to meet the customers demand. However, the study conducted in the last month. To take this argument to be convincing one need to assume
a lot. The scenario may change by time. For example due to political turmoil the economy may change. Inflation may occur and this may result to increase in price
of the daily used products. It wouldn't be possible for the stores to sale their products.
Lastly, there is no correlation between the conclusion and the supporting facts. The author is considering the study to be true. There is a possibility that the
study is conducted on the reliable customers. They can be residents of the housing colonies near the store. May be the time was the season of sales and one can get
that amount of crowd at every shop. There are a lot of situations and facts must be taken into consideration to strengthen the statement.
In conclusion the argument is not convincing due to above mentioned flaws. To substantiate the argument some more facts are needed to be ruled out.
Thanx
