Lana bought 2 stocks last year and sold both of them [#permalink] New post 29 Dec 2007, 10:39
Lana bought 2 stocks last year and sold both of them yesterday. if the selling price of stock B was twice that of stock A, did Lana make a profit on the sale of these 2 stocks?

1. Lana sold stock A for 20% more than its purchase price
2. Lana sold stock B for more than 90% of its purchase price?

let SP of A be 100 then SP o B is 200
Using (1) we know she made profit on A.

SP 120 CP100
SP100 CP=100*100/120=83.33
Profit of 16.66 on A
We donot know if she made profit or loss on B

Using (2) we know she made profi on B

SP 190 CP 100
SP 200 CP 200*100/190=105.xx SO pofit of about 95

We donot know if she made profit ot loss on A

Togather SHE MADE PROFIT

OA is actually E

suppose the selling prices of A and B were s and 2s respectively. we need to know whether the sum of the purchase prices was less than 3s

1. s=1.2 pa, so pa=5s/6 not suff
2. 2s>0.9pb, so pb<20s/9

let's see C....pa+pb<5s>3s, so pa+pb may also be<3s
