Largest Fraction: m25 Q#15 gmat club test

Question Stats:

100% (00:00) correct 0% (00:00) wrong based on 0 sessions
I get the explanation and answer for this question. But can anyone explain a short cut? Also, what if the denominator was not > the numerator by 5 on each of the fractions?

Which of the following fractions is the largest?

It seems to me this one of the shortcut to solve. 5/3596 will have lowest value which will be subtracted from 1, so C will be largest fraction in this case.

If denominator was not > the numerator by 5, then it will be time consuming to calculate, but still you can apply approximation method to calculate e.g. 1- 6/3596 or 1-5/3595 which one will be large fraction will be later one.

largest fraction .... i.e smallest deduction

i.e largest denominator.

Hence the answer is C.

Try small numbers -
1/2 = 50%
2/3 = 66.66%
3/4 = 75%
4/5 = 80%

Which shows that the difference between numberator and denominator remaining the same, the higher the numberator and denominator, the larger is the value...

Such questions may be solved by observation. I don't think there is a fixed approach for that.

In each fraction the difference between the denominator and nominator is 5. As the the denominator gets bigger the fraction gets smaller when the difference between the two number stays constant.... ie. 5/10 < 20/25 < 100/105
