I know that these question has appear in the forum before but could someone please comment on my reasoning. Thanks.

Lark Manufacturing Company initiated a voluntary Quality Circles program for machine operators. Independent surveys of employee attitudes indicated that the machine operators participating in the program were less satisfied with their work situations after two years of the program's start. Obviously, any workers who participate in a Quality Circles program will, as a result, become less satisfied with their job.

All weaken EXCEPT:

A. The second survey occurred during a period of recession when rumors of cutbacks and layoffs at Lark Manufacturing were plentiful
B. The surveys also showed that those Lark machine operators who neither participated in Quality Circles nor knew anyone who did so reported the same degree of lessened satisfaction with their work situations as did the Lark machine operators who participated in Quality Circles
C. While pariticipating in Quality Circles at Lark Manufacturing, machine operators exhibited two of the primary indicators of improved job satisfaction: increased productivity and decreased absenteeism
D. Several workers at Lark Manufacturing who had participated in Quality Circles while employed at other companies reported that while participating in Quality Circles in pervious companies, their work satisfaction has increased
E. The machine operators who participate in Quality Circles reported that when the program started, the felt that participation might improve their work situation

This is my explanation:

A. Alternate premise leads to the conclusion - Weakens
B. Alternate premise leads to the conclusion i.e. inaccurate data leads to the conclusion - Weakens
C. Conclusion given is opposite of the conclusion of the argument i.e. satisfy- Weakens
D. Conclusion given is opposite of the conclusion of the argument i.e. satisfy - Weakens
E. In the same direction of the premise may lead to the same conclusion as the argument - Strengthen/ neutral

Hence, Ans: E

we have causal reasoning: participating in quality Circle program --> become less satisfied with their job

All weaken EXCEPT:

A. The second survey occurred during a period of recession when rumors of cutbacks and layoffs at Lark Manufacturing were plentiful
weaken.. it introduces alternative cause for becoming less satisfied
B. The surveys also showed that those Lark machine operators who neither participated in Quality Circles nor knew anyone who did so reported the same degree of lessened satisfaction with their work situations as did the Lark machine operators who participated in Quality Circles
weaken.. it says becoming less satisfaction is not related to quality circle program
C. While participating in Quality Circles at Lark Manufacturing, machine operators exhibited two of the primary indicators of improved job satisfaction: increased productivity and decreased absenteeism weaken.. it indicates that the survey data has problem
D. Several workers at Lark Manufacturing who had participated in Quality Circles while employed at other companies reported that while participating in Quality Circles in previous companies, their work satisfaction has increased the extreme language of the conclusion makes this option a weakener.. conclusion says any workers who participate in a quality circles program so even if employees participate in another company's quality circle program and report increase satisfaction, it weakens the argument!!
E. The machine operators who participate in Quality Circles reported that when the program started, the felt that participation might improve their work situation
this option correctly explains the reason for being less satisfied after participating in quality circle program... their expectation was not fulfilled.

My reasoning:

Argument: Participation in Quality Circle leads to lower job satisfaction.

A. Provides a reason other than Quality Circle for the decreased satisfaction. Weakens.
B. Workers who didn't participate also had decreased job satisfaction. Weakens.
C. During participation, the workers exhibited indicators of increased satisfaction. This could, however, result from something other than job satisfaction. We see an effect, but we have no idea of the cause. Doesn't really weaken nor strengthen.
D. Reported improvement of job satisfaction while participating in Quality Circle. Weakens.
E. At the beginning of the program, the workers who participated felt that participation could improve their work situation -> their job satisfaction wasn't great to begin with. The program could have caused the decreased job satisfaction after two years, but the reason could simply be that nothing has changed, so while at the beginning of the program they were somewhat more satisfied as they thought the program would improve their work satisfaction, now that the program hasn't worked, their satisfaction has decreased. Doesn't necessarily weaken, doesn't strengthen.

In my mind, since E could weaken the argument but C doesn't, C is the most logical choice.

I ran into a real problem with this one....

A. Weaken
B. Weaken
C. Doesn't necessarily weaken. this can be a result of a number of thing.
D. Other circles are irrelevant to this argument. We don't know how they were structured, who ran than etc....
E. Can weaken -> if there were no promotions, that could be a reason for dis-satisfaction....

How can we resolve this?

How does "A" weakens the conclusion ? The premise hasn't quoted any number for survey while "A" is specific to Second survey. I thought, just like E, even option A is irrelevant. Pls suggest.

How does B weaken ? Isn't it implying that the reduction in satisfaction is regardless of participation in training program ?

What you said in bold implies that B weakens the argument
The conclusion is - Participation in a Quality Control Program causes less satisfaction with the job

One way to weaken a cause and effect conclusion is to find an alternate cause for the effect.

Now since people who didn't even participate in the QCP felt less satisfied with their job and people who did participate also were not satisfied, there has to be some other cause for the low satisfaction because according to the conclusion only the people who were in the QCP were affected and had low satisfaction.

D. Several workers at Lark Manufacturing who had participated in Quality Circles while employed at other companies reported that while participating in Quality Circles in previous companies, their work satisfaction has increased *The program can increase job satisfaction at Lark.
E. The machine operators who participate in Quality Circles reported that when the program started, the felt that participation might improve their work situation *This would point to QC as the source of decreased satisfaction if they had expectations when beginning the program that were not met over the course of it.
