There are many benefits to timing your practice, including:
Last year, medical schools in the United States received only about half as much applications for admission as they had 25 years ago.
A. only about half as much applications for admission as they had
B. only about half as many applications for admission as they had
C. only about half of the applications for admission that they did
D. about only half as many applications for admission as they did
E. only about half as many applications for admission as they received
[ARCO CAT 3: 12]
This should not end with 'had'. 'As they had' 25 years ago, doesn't make any sense. 'Received' gets compared to 'had'. Hence A and B are out. Moreover A has 'much'. 'That they did' in C incorrect. 'About only half' in D incorrect usage. Hence, will go with E.
A bend in the road is not the end of the road unless you fail to take a turn.....
The issue with B should be the wrong use of past participle. "Recieved" cannot be omitted to complete the past participle "had received" as it is the first time the part participle appears. For E, "received" can be omitted as its simple past tense form has appeared earlier.
Only B & E are close enough But I think B is better bet than E because the two events are not in the same time frame so past perfect is required to contrast an event last year with that 25 years ago. _________________
