[ARCO CAT 3: 12] I would go with E for reasons marked in red.

[ARCO CAT 3: 12] This should not end with 'had'. 'As they had' 25 years ago, doesn't make any sense. 'Received' gets compared to 'had'. Hence A and B are out. Moreover A has 'much'. 'That they did' in C incorrect. 'About only half' in D incorrect usage. Hence, will go with E. Sony

IMO: E
as many is the right idiom...and "had received" refers correctly to the subject.

Confused between B and E.
my vote goes for B as in E the 'received' word is unnecessarily repeated.
whats the OA?

whats the OA? Dear Kanhaiya....I believe that usage of past perfect tense "had" in this sentence where clear time frames like last year, 25 years ago are already given is incorrect. What do you say???

OA is E right?
The issue with B should be the wrong use of past participle. "Recieved" cannot be omitted to complete the past participle "had received" as it is the first time the part participle appears. For E, "received" can be omitted as its simple past tense form has appeared earlier.

between D and E, I choose E because of the unique word order in "about only half as many applications."

I'll go with E. Past perfect is appropriate in this example. Only refers to the verb received, not to the word "about."

Only B & E are close enough But I think B is better bet than E because the two events are not in the same time frame so past perfect is required to contrast an event last year with that 25 years ago.
