LBS EMBA Worth Doing?? [#permalink] New post 27 Oct 2009, 06:43
Hi all,

I’m currently researching MBA programs and am trying to decide on which ones to apply for. I am based in London and plan to attend a European school. I am hoping to get into LBS, Oxford or Cambridge.
My background is in IT Consulting and Investment Banking Technology. My goal is to move into banking permanently or start my own business. Recently, I attained a new front office role where I will be partnering with traders and equity sales teams. Its an exciting opportunity and one I don’t want to waste. Rather than pack everything in I was thinking of doing an EMBA at LBS as an alternative to a full time MBA.

From the background research I’ve done it seems like an excellent program. A lot of the students are experienced bankers, consultants, medical professionals etc. There is an emphasis on banking and entrepreneurship on the program – exactly what I’m looking for.

Financially it will work out a lot cheaper. However, the workload is extremely challenging and the program itself it not as well recognised as the full time MBA.

My question is what is the disparity between the recognition the LBS EMBA receives and other top 20 full time programs? What is it comparable to? Is the recognition along the lines of a top 50 full-time program? Should I stay well away from an EMBA? I am in my late 20’s, am I too young to benefit from an EMBA?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Regards,

Hi Aztec you might find the part time MiF program more beneficial for moving into banking permanently. The EMBA program caters for 35+ and usually folks are quite senior in their career paths (and its a great program). LBS also has two other programs catering for senior level execs - the Sloan program and the international EMBAs (tieups with HKUST and Columbia).

However, age of late 20s is the normal MBA zone. I dont feel that you will fit in the student body (that is - if you get admitted at this age). You can't really compare the EMBA to regular MBA programs (not just LBS MBA but any other top MBA program). For your aims and your experience level, regular MBA makes far more sense.

Why don't you start this new role and see how it works out before rethinking your MBA plans. 31-32 is still OK to apply for full time MBA at LBS (in fact I know of several students of that age in my class - I'm 30 this year myself).

bsd_lover,

Thanks a lot. Yep, the EMBA is definitely targeted at people later into their careers. Not the best option.
Going to apply for LBS, Oxford and Cambridge. Deep down I think the only option is full time for me. Part-time sounds like a good alternative but I won't get the full experience.

Cheers,

Guys,

I am totally confused. I am still not able to find the answer to my question " Is it really worth to go for EMBA from LBS" ?

Irrespective of where i stands as of now, in case if i would like to switch my career later down the line , will LBS EMBA be able to help me with this ?

Need advise .. ! Please help.

PS: I have 10 years of experience in total and i am 31 now.

Regards
RS
