Leadership? [#permalink] New post 14 Jun 2010, 17:14
Hi,

I'm planning on applying to b-school in a couple years and I'm gunning for Stanford. One issue I have is my leadership resume is kinda weak since I didn't have any leadership roles in college. I'm a Software Engineer and the path to management at my company is rather slow (i.e. at least several years).

I'm planning on doing all I can to demonstrate leadership at work, but I thought it would be worthwhile trying to develop my leadership skills outside of work. In high school I spent 500 hours volunteering at a food bank and I was an assistant supervisor so I'm planning on volunteering again and hopefully getting back into a supervisory role. I'm wondering if anyone has any other suggestions/advice for how one can build leadership experience outside of work.

consider joining your local IEEE chapter and getting involved with them: http://www.ieee.org/index.html

if you're active enough in your chapter, you might be able to run for a position on the local volunteer board after a year. also, if you have a strong commitment (either because of your heritage or other) to a specific ethnic group, you might consider joining an organization like SHPE (society of hispanic profesional engineers), NSHMBA (national society of hispanic MBAs), NSBE (national society of of black engineers), national black MBA association, etc. etc.
