Leadership Characteristics Examples [#permalink] New post 25 Nov 2009, 13:53
As someone that is not at a management position at his job and was never a club leader, I was hoping for a thread compiling leadership characteristics for someone like myself. I'm sure I'm not the only one at this position. Perhaps someone can pitch ideas for leadership characteristics that we can use in essays that may be displayed in non-leadership positions at work and in every day life. For example, something like taking initiative at your job. Would that be considered leadership experience that would be looked upon favorably?

-Managing recruiting for undergrads
-Taking a lead on junior staff training
-Managing projects between separate teams/offices/etc.
-Leadership in extra-currics/volunteer work
-Bringing about some sort of change in procedures or a new analysis at work (i.e. overhauling audit procedures)
-Motivating peers to take on some new responsibility that they weren't doing before

I think a lot of it is very job specific so it depends what you do, but yeah, I definitely think you can show leadership without having the "managing director" or "VP" title. Which essays are you working on?

I'm actually not working on essays yet. The reason I found this site was because I took the GMAT in October, but I won't apply at least till next year. However, I do remember seeing a Kellog Essay that asked about leadership experience. Thanks for the help. And I'm not even a manager at my job, so I'm far from a managing director and VP. :) Hence I wanted ideas.

I have been asking myself the same questions, [GmatNY86]. I'm also not in managing position and also never been a club leader. And I'm also trying to apply next year. [jankynoname] suggestions are all true, based on my research. Now, it's a matter of getting the opportunities and executing them.

If you have a year you will have time to pick up some leadership traits. Some that would be good for non-formal leaders would be negotiation skills, motivating coworkers, planning problems, organizing schedules.

Well I don't have too many opportunities at my job. Not to say I have no chance and not to say I've never showed any leadership either. I did "train" somewhat a new member of my team that had the same position that I had (when the manager wasn't around). I use train loosely, but I guess that's pretty much what it was.

jankynoname wrote:
-Managing recruiting for undergrads No. Kids at my (fortune 200) company do this because it's fun and means free trips back to party at their alma mater.
-Taking a lead on junior staff training Yes, if you take initiative. Not if its required.
-Managing projects between separate teams/offices/etc. Yes, if it's your responsibility to make people work together and/or if you take initiative.
-Leadership in extra-currics/volunteer work Yes, if you take initiative.
-Bringing about some sort of change in procedures or a new analysis at work (i.e. overhauling audit procedures) Yes. Breaking new ground is what leadership does.
-Motivating peers to take on some new responsibility that they weren't doing before Yes.

As far as leadership traits, here's a link I like:
http://www.nwlink.com/~donclark/leader/leadchr.html

Almost anything can be a leadership experience... but if leadership is easy you're probably not actually leading :)

Thats indeed a great thread. Thanks for starting.

Leadership can be anything, any big or small initiatives. But I think the bigger problem is that does the adcom find your initiatives impressive , though you might have been thinking that you have done very good job.
