Can anyone explain why they use Past Perfect here? I don't get the meaing of the sentence. Past Perfect is used when we have two actions in the past and one is before the other.Where is the first action here?

A. Less than 35 years after the release of African honeybees outside Sao Paulo, Brazil,

B. In less than 35 years since releasing African honeybees outside Sao Paulo, Brazil,

C. In less than the 35 years since African honeybees had been released outside Sao Paulo, Brazil,

D. it took less than 35 years from the release of African honeybees outside Sao Paulo, Brazil, when

E. it took less than 35 years after the time that African honeybees were released outside Sao paulo, Brazil, and then

Good Q

C - Eliminate - Use of "the" is confusing.
D - Eliminate - Use of "when" - Seems to say that african bees where known as killer bees but not anymore. Context Change
E - Eliminate - Use of "then" - Context Change.

Left with A & B. Now the devil.
B - Eliminate - The reason is that Past Perfect is used when you know the exact duration. For example: They had been walking for an hour.

But in this case we are not sure of the duration. The sentence just says less than 35years. Hence Past Perfect.

Hence A is the answer.

B Illogically and incorrectly implies that “descendants” of the “African honeybees” released their ancestors outside of Mexico. Also, the preposition “after” is superior to “since” in this usage on the basis of specific meaning.

C “The” is unnecessary, “since” is inferior to “after,” and the past perfect “had been” muddles the time comparison attempted by the past perfect “had migrated” that appears later in the sentence.

D The opening phrase is wordy, “when” is illogically utilized, and the overall structure is awkward, confusing and poorly styled.

E Wordy, awkward, redundant—in a word, terrible.
