Is it a bad idea to get a LOR from an unpaid internship I held in college? I interned for a friend of the family one summer at a major brokerage firm who could write me a great letter, but would the admissions people frown upon it?

If you are a younger applicant with only a couple years work experience, I would see no negative to it as long as you feel the recommender knows you as a person well enough to write a compelling LOR.

I agree, it depends. How long ago was the internship? And how long ago did you graduate from college?

The internship was in the summer of 2005, prior to my senior year. Graduated in May of 2006. I have been at one company since graduating and will be getting the other LOR from my manager where I am employed.

I am going to say that I don't think its the greatest idea in the world - unless you worked particularly closely and you did something truly unique while there. An unpaid internship during college is not professional work experience and is looked at differently.

That being said, if you cant find another good alternative at work, then go ahead. But if I was on the adcom my thoughts might settle on "why not two people from the firm they work at"? (unless the rec is truly outstanding). The last thing you want an adcom member stuck on is questions like that.
