Letter to the editor: Proposition Q, a controversial measure [#permalink]

Letter to the editor: Proposition Q, a controversial measure on this year’s ballot, would prohibit the ownership of handguns within the city’s limits. Under the plan, gun owners would have a 90-day grace period to turn in their weapons to authorities. Proponents of the proposition argue that fewer handguns on the streets would lead to less violent crime, making the city safer for all of its citizens. Unfortunately, the ban would actually have the opposite effect. Since only law abiding citizens would honor the ban, armed criminals would not only keep their weapons but would also have the confidence to act with impunity on a population that could no longer defend itself. In the letter to the editor, the two portions in boldface play which of the following roles? • The first is an observation that the author uses to support a particular position; the second is that position. • The first is a pattern of cause and effect that the author believes to be true; the second offers evidence to contradict this pattern. • The first is a position that the author argues will not hold in this case; the second is the author’s position. • The first is a prediction that the author believes to be untrue. The second is a statement of fact that undermines the author’s position. • The first is a direct relationship that the author believes will not hold in this case; the second offers evidence in support of the author’s position.

Hi tuanquang269, I just googled this question and found out that it is indeed a controversial question. This is a MGMAT question and Ron from MGMAT has himself agreed that this is a disputable question. See this link: http://www.manhattangmat.com/forums/let ... t7760.html

+1E Although debatable, I am taking up this question for the sake of discussion. Since the above discussion is between C and E. I will take only these two point. BF 1 – Either (First is a direct relationship) or (first is a position that the author argues will not hold in this case), C and E both wins BF 2 – Either (The second is the author’s position) or (the second offers evidence in support of the author’s position) The primary difference here is between the Author’s position i.e. Unfortunately, the ban would actually have the opposite effect Evidence in support of that position i.e. Since only law abiding citizens would honor the ban, armed criminals would not only keep their weapons but would also have the confidence to act with impunity on a population that could no longer defend itself This eliminates option C.

IMO C.
I think A and B are easy to eliminate. The problem with both D and E is that they use the words "fact" and "evidence" respectively for the second bold part while it is only an opinion.
I think all the three (C, D and E) describe the first bold part properly. Please let me know in case I am missing something.

I think differently with the guy above, I chose E. The first is a direct relationship that the author believes will not hold in this case What is this direct relationship: fewer handguns on the streets=> less violent crime, making the city safer for all of its citizens? Actually, the author's position is that Less violent crime did not be hold. armed criminals would not only keep their weapons but would also have the confidence to act with impunity on a population that could no longer defend itself => It's is the supporting reasons for the author's position.

+1C.
I think A, B, and D are easily eliminated. The answer therefore is between C and E. E shouldn't be it because the author doesn't present any EVIDENCE. It's not factual; it's a conclusion and a prediction/opinion. So E is out.
C: BF1 is obviously a position, and a position countering the author's own argument. SO he's saying it won't hold in this case. BF2 is his own position/opinion, which he predicts will happen.
Note that no EVIDENCE is given for either position.

Note that no EVIDENCE is given for either position. On second thought, C says "the second is the author’s position." It's a premise and opinion, but not the author's position, right? His position (or the conclusion) would be that the "ban would actually have the opposite effect." No? Weird question.

The second is a statement of fact that undermines the author’s position. • The first is a direct relationship that the author believes will not hold in this case; the second offers evidence in support of the author’s position. My pick would be E . E is the best of all . Although I am a skeptical of the second part in E , which says that the second is the EVIDENCE . The second statement is not an evidence . It is just an opinion or belief .... But other options are not even close and can rule those out. Moderators might want to check on this , since it is a gmatclub Q. Quote: • The first is an observation that the author uses to support a particular position; the second is that position. first one is an observation that author uses to support some position. But second is not that position. The second is just a claim supporting authors main concluision Quote: • The first is a pattern of cause and effect that the author believes to be true; the second offers evidence to contradict this pattern.. The author does not believe the first to be true. Some proponents hold that belief, but not author. The second, for sure, contradicts this pattern , but is not an evidence . Quote: • The first is a position that the author argues will not hold in this case; the second is the author’s position . first is not s position/conclusion that author argues against. It is just some info or opinion of some proponents of proposition . position would mean conclusion . Hence it is not true. It is just a premise which the author does not agree with. The second is not the author's position/conclusion. It is premise supporting the conclusion Quote: • The first is a prediction that the author believes to be untrue. The second is a statement of fact that undermines the author’s position . the second does not undermine authors position. It is supporting author's position .
