I was able to eliminate B,C, and D. But what's wrong with E?

'As did' - distorts the meaning of the sentence.

When we use 'as did' the sentence wrongly conveys the meaning that John Birks played many other instruments in the same way it was played by other jazz players.

you are not comparing the actions or the types of instruments that the new guys is playing, rather you are just saying X is like Y in the way he plays several instruments. But the core of the structure is to show similarity in people, what follows is secondary. This rules out B, C and E.

In D, Just like is longer than Like and doesn't significantly add or remove any more meaning than "Like", so redundancy.

Answer choice: A.
