Basal readers are elementary readers, kids most likely. Ms Burton is one of those old fogies who believe a taste for good literature can be taught by forcing students to read rambling, 1000-page long books. Ms Burtons, like other educators, dulls her basal readers with the likes of James Joyce (who I personally adore ). A it is.

The sentence is not about substituting one thing for another. Because itâ€™s about readers, if you say â€œfor dull basal readersâ€
