B for sure
the sentence is saying that the sandpiper is vanishing like the grassy fields it needs for nesting, because of residential development and farming practices

Like the grassy fields and old pastures XXXXX in the northeastern United States(where it is unlike)... there seems to be some comparision happening in option "D"...
Option "B" seems to compare "grassy fields and old pastures" with the "bird"
so "D" seems to be correct..

really hard one my guess is D because it should be comparing similar things...grassy pastures to northeast area, not to the bird, sort of a confusing sentence

My first reaction was A......'itself', in B, was too awkward for me.
But if you look at A, it has a major problem....A wud be right had here been 'as a result' instead of 'is a result'......"sandpipers vanishing ...is a result" doesn't make an sense .
GMAT is not abt the perfect answer but abt the good answer

B it is.
First, I attempted it correctly in the diagnostic og-11 today.
Second, there is a clear comparison here as like the grassy fields, the bird is vanishing----.
A compares grassy fields to sandpiper vanishings. Thus wrong.

in A, it should be "the sandpiper's vanishing .."
but even that would not make the sentence correct.

IMO the anwer is A.
You don't need are as "vanishing" requires is.
