Long Passages

Structure:
 Intro paragraph-summary > important
 Body paragraphs-Topic sentence >important
-details –support the topic sentences> not important-glance through
Last paragraph – could be another body paragraph or shift of focus - important

What to look for:
 Summary-What’s the point/logic or purpose, what does author want to say
 Other paragraphs- what’s the point, why is it needed
 Details-Why are they there? How do they relate to main point
 Concentrate on what the facts do and not what they are

Short Passages

Structure:
 They do not have a regular structure like a long passage

What to look for:
 What’s the point/logic or purpose, what does author want to say
 Why are they there? How do they relate to main point
 Concentrate on what the facts do and not what they are
 What do they support/refute

Question Types
 Main Idea, Supporting Idea, Evaluation, Inference

Answer Choices
 Answers not supported by passage
 Answers not mentioned in passage
 Extreme answers
 Opposite answers

Main Idea Questions
 Ignore the details(black them out in your mind)
 Predict the main idea - cover up the answer choices and predict the answer before looking at the choices, and then see what is closest to your view
 Main idea will definitely be mentioned in the first half of the passage itself-if it’s not talked about it until the second half, it’s not the main idea-main idea may touch both the passages

Inference
 MUST BE TRUE based on the passage
 Inference on GMAT indicates that it can be proved 100% using the details-
 Inference in real world means ‘guess’ or ‘assumption’ but in gmat it needs to be proved completely. No outside information is allowed
