There are many benefits to timing your practice, including:
Currently i am doing my Marketing Internship in China and i will complete my final semester of Masters in Management (Marketing) from Kaunas University of Technology in May 2012. I am interested in applying for PhD in Marketing in USA. Right now, i do not have much knowledge about GMAT exam. Do i need to find some business schools in USA before giving the exam? I mean, do i have to start application in the business schools in order to sit in GMAT exam? Information about it would be really helpful to me.
You should actually do the exact opposite. While it's okay to have an idea where you want to go to school, your likelihood of acceptance depends greatly on your GMAT score. Study for and take the GMAT (a process that may take anywhere between 1-6 months). Then, use your score as a guide (not an absolute) to school selection.
Yes, definitely get the GMAT done first. A 700+ will give you a decent shot at a Top 30 US program. I got 700 and only received an interview with UNC Kenan-Flager in the US. Got rejected from USC Marshall, Wisconsin and still waiting for Cornell (likely reject).
Additionally, a high GMAT doesn't mean anything without a strong and compelling personal statement. I think that was the main reason why I got into some decent programs in North America.
