LORs from Supervisors? [#permalink]
13 Aug 2008, 13:48
Is it mandatory to ask your supervisor to write LORs, or answer questions the universities have requested? What if you manager - is way too busy to involve himself? or other reasons that prevents him?
Under what circumstances can you change the above and let the AdComs know that you would want a replacement?
Can you'll provide some reasons and insights
Thanks, Pawan

I believe the general consensus is that if you cannot have a current supervisor write a rec for you, it is best to explain in the optional essay why you were unable to use your current supervisor.

~Sam yep, and you should be able to find that under the 'instructions - LOR' part of the application for most schools.

I have already lined up my two recommenders 10 days back.. But today one of the recommender told me that she might not be able to work on it as she found out her recurring cancer needs to be treated in next several days. I completely understand her and i don't even want to bother her. Looking back at my apps, now i dont have second recommender Was thinking about my previous managers, but everyone will ask me to provide a write up. I have previous HR manager whom i continue work closely in a voluntary oraganization. Is it OK to get a recommendation from my previous HR manager? She doesn't know my work, but overall she knows me personally well.

I didn't use a direct supervisor and it didn't seem to affect my candidacy. Granted, I didn't get in, but I got waitlisted a bunch of places so it couldn't have been a dealbreaker. I explained in my optional essay that I am coming up on a promotion and don't want to jeopardize that at my company. In my goals essay, I explained how this promotion, while a great opportunity, isn't consistent with my career goals and, for that reason, I want an MBA now.
