I think you forgot to tell me what your goals are and what you do for a living. How much leadership do you have at work? Based on what you told me I think Stanford and Harvard are out. Your odds at the rest of the schools you mentioned will depend on how much impact you've shown in your career and how good you are at making your profile stand out from the crowd. At best you would be "competitive" at them, however, because you come from a relatively common demographic whose qualifications are usually strong. So I would encourage you to add a few schools from lower in the food chain to improve your odds.
I am a Sr software engineer working with world's largest airline services & support company. My goals as of now are to specialize in strategic management.
Based on what you've told me (which is not alot) I think these schools are long shots, but MIT and Haas are not impossible. You will need to give them leadership and impact stories and work hard to show your individuality in your essays. I would encourage you to add a few slightly less competitive schools to your list.
Paul, . Thanks for your evaluation and advice, I have turned 31 and am now making around 90 K in IT - do you think the ROI on doing MBA which might be around 150 K justified at the stage I am in my career . Will it advance my career significantly ? Can I get into investment banking and leverage my technical skills ?
Many applicants before you have had salaries in your range and have decided the MBA is worth the considerable investment. Certainly, MBAs from the top schools can enjoy significantly higher incomes than you do now, but aside from compensation the MBA is an effective degree for people trying to make the career switch that you mentioned into IB. People use the MBA to make the IT to IB transition all the time.
