Question Stats:

0% (00:00) correct 0% (00:00) wrong based on 0 sessions
A ship is transporting several cats and a crew (sailors, a cook, and a one-legged captain) to a nearby port. If these passengers combined have 15 heads and 41 legs, then how many cats is the ship transporting?

We can make equation like

4C + 2S = 38 => 2C + S = 18 ------ (1)
&
C + S = 13 ------ (2)

subtracting 2 from 1

2C+S =18
-C - S = -13
------------
C = 5
But answer is 6. Can someone please guide me as where i'm making a mistake :roll:

15 = cats + crew ------(1)
41 = 4 cats + (2crew - 1) This means cats have 4 legs. Each crew has 2 legs except the captain, so subtract 1
or
42 = 4cats + 2crew ------(2)

Multiply (1) by 2 =>
30 = 2cats + 2crew ------(3)
Subtracting (3) from (2) we get -
12 = 2 cats
cats =6
