I have a question regarding the solution.

OA is 1281

But shouldnt it be 1280?

The 1281 it could be, when the question would ask: how many has he open, to see at least one taffy candy?

Here is the question:

A candy factory manufactures various types of candy: 30% are dark chocolate, 25% are milk chocolate, 20% taffy, 5% caramel, and the rest are cream. Due to a hardware failure, all of the candy are mixed and dispatched into boxes holding 20 individually wrapped pieces of candy each. If 80 boxes are packed before the failure is caught, what is the maximum number of candy pieces a quality control inspector can open before coming across a taffy candy?

Percentage Distribution:
30 Dark Chocolates
25 Milk Chocolates
20 Taffy
5 Caramel
20 Cream

Number of candy per box = 20
Number of boxes = 80
Total number of candies = 80 x 20 = 1600

Number of Taffy = 20/100 x 1600 = 320

Rest of the lot is 1600 - 320 = 1280

So if he picks 1280 candies, there is a possibility that it doesn't include a Taffy!

But... if he picks 1281 candies, there must be atleast 1 Taffy in it!

So ans: 1281

Yes, but the question say: What is the maximum number of candy pieces a quality control inspector can open before coming across a taffy candy. - This number is 1280 in my eyes.

I think whether the correct answer is 1280 or 1281 is a matter of interpretation. You could argue that you first have to open the 1281th candy to see that it is in fact a Taffy.

At the end of the day it doesn't really matter as the other answer choices are not even close.

I agree there is a problem with the wording. I also got confused with the "before coming across a taffy candy" phrase. To solve it, the answer should be 1280 or the wording should be changed to "until coming across a taffy candy".

It's not that the other answer choices are not close. After seeing so many tricky questions, you don't want your answer to be wrong because you are on the other side of the limit. My opinion is that the question shouldn't give place to confusion.
