At Springfield High, three-fourths of the male students and one-half of the female students speak a foreign language. If there are two-thirds more males than females, what fraction of the students speak a foreign language?

Explanation of this question translates number of male=2/3f (f being the number of females)

I think we cannot translate 2/3 more males than females to 2/3f

It can only be m=2/3*m i.e. f=1/3m.

Am I missing something here?

I'm not positive but to me, it sounds like this: two-thirds more males than females -> e.g. assume there are 90 students... if there are 2/3 more males than females, then there are 60 more males than females, so 90 = #females + 60 + #females
30 = 2* # females

females = 15
males = 75

So the # of females would actually be 1/5 the number of males.

I believe OP is correct. There seems to be an issue with the problem.

2/3 more males than females should translate to m = (5/3)f. Indeed, based on just the wording, we should expect to have a greater number of males than females.

Looking at the OA, the table shows fewer males than females, and based on the above that is incorrect.

The question is reworded to the following:

Quote:
At Springfield High, three-fourths of the male students and one-half of the female students speak a foreign language. If the number of males is two-thirds the number of females, what fraction of the students speak a foreign language?

I think ans is OB = 3/5
we know ... Foreign speaking male (3/4M) and female (1/2F)
the number of males is two-thirds the number of females = M=2/3 F or F = 3/2 M

hence [3/4M + 1/2*3/2 M] / [M+3/2M] = 3/5
