If both X and Y are positive integers and X/Y=2.625 , which of the following can be a remainder of X divided by Y?

(C) 2008 GMAT Club - m09#8

2
4
5
8
9

It follows from the stem that X=2Y+0.625Y. Therefore, the remainder can be expressed as 0.626Y=5/8*Y where Y is a positive integer. Then Y is a multiple of 8, and the remainder is a multiple of 5.

Can anybody give a detailed explanation? I don't understand the OE, particularly the last sentence.
Thank you :)

Per my method answer is C.

Given: X/Y = 2.625

Plugging in method : X=21 and Y=8. This gives answers choice C i.e. 5

Could you elaborate your solution? This one is still unclear to me :(

I dont know how right this method is, but I always use this and 99% of the times the answer is right.

x/y = 2.625 = 2625/1000 = 105/40 = 21/8 => division 2 and reminder 5
